It’s been said that the history of polka dots dates all the way back to the 1920’s. Minnie Mouse made them mainstream and now they are at the top of the trend list in 2018.
You can find them on just about every article of clothing each year in multiple color combinations and tons of silhouettes. Black and white are my favorite combo but don’t be scared to add in color. Below are a couple faves that I’ve found to flaunt my fondness for dots.
This Free People Dress makes me feel sexy, flirtatious and bold. The midi-length immediately won me over because of my midi-dress-obsession. I also loved that the back is out because it’s very rare that I can wear a dress with no bra. With August being here already, I plan to close out my summer in this one.
While I prefer to wear the dress as is, a t-shirt can be layered underneath or you could throw on a denim jacket or leather moto jacket to toughen it up a bit.
Whatever you do, do not wear it with cheap, red jewelry. (Trust me on this one.)
Keeping with the black and white polka-dot look, I also scored this cute blouse during the Zara Summer Sale. The belted wrap around detail is another check on the trend list and pulls your waist in to create the illusion of an hourglass figure. The black and white color-scheme keeps it classic. I paired it with high-waisted flare jeans from Anthropologie to dress it down. However, dressing it up with a pencil skirt or black ankle pants would take it up a notch.
If you need a pop of color, don’t be afraid to pair it with bright-colored ankle pants. But try a vibrant option like fuchsia or royal blue. Then, keep your accessories neutral so your look stays classy and fun.
I also picked up this mixed-print skirt from the Zara Summer Sale. It went fast and you can see why! I gave it a touch of edge by wearing it with a graphic tee that I picked up at a street fair in Oakland. But wear it with a simple, black top or make it more casual with a denim shirt. You can also wear it with sneakers and a moto jacket.
As always, I couldn’t send you out without a few polka dot trends to try on your own. Here are a few more wallet-friendly styles that you should try:
- Target comes in with a win for this Cute Dress
- Put your polka dots on the bottom with these Joggers.
- This Top is perfect for my curvy ladies and adds a pop of color.
