For most retailers, Black Friday is one of the most important days of the month, quarter and maybe the year. Customers are willing to leave the warmth of their homes, wait in long lines and even forego a second helping of leftovers just to score what they think is the biggest deal of the year.
Well, you better watch out and you better not shout because I’m about to spill the beans on what Black Friday is all about. I’ve worked in retail for over thirteen years and have learned about a lot of the ins and out to master this grand shopping day like a champ. Here are my top tips and tricks to attack Black Friday like a pro:
- Pre-Shop – Make a list and check it twice! If you pre-shop, you will have an idea of what you want. Being prepared ensures you won’t get caught up in the purchase-frenzy and will help you avoid buyer’s remorse. Being happy with your purchase means you can avoid the repeat trip back to the store for a return. Don’t forget that online inventory often differs from what’s in your local store. If time permits, peruse in person then get your scroll on at home.
- Don’t wait until Black Friday – say what, now? You heard me. Most retailers want to capitalize on customer behaviors leading up to Black Friday and need to drive traffic into their stores before the big day. Therefore, they will start their Black Friday deals as early as that Monday or Tuesday. The same deals you see when you pre-shop will often be the same deals that are happening on Black Friday. Some retailers may even do the weekend prior. Then on Black Friday, they may add an extra percent off or give a distinct discount on select items in their inventory. You have to decide if the few dollars in saving is worth your time, gas and peace of mind.
- Utilize Social Media– your favorite influencers are the top . . . uh, influencers. Retailers are paying popular bloggers to give the inside scoop on popular products and services, inspire your shopping and provide gifting ideas. Some retailers will even give exclusive offer deets on the ‘Gram or Facebook. You are probably swiping up anyway, save some money in the process.
- Shop Cyber Monday – why bother with other customers, long lines, traffic, and parking lot bandits when you can shop from the comfort of your home? Stay in your jammies and scroll your heart away. Cyber Monday deals often trump Black Friday deals, so good things come to those who wait.
- Shop Small Business – feel good about what you’re buying by supporting the community and your local stores. While their deals may not be as grand as the major retailers, you’ll have unique, thoughtful pieces to give as gifts or enjoy for yourself.
